Advances in Computational and Theoretical Chemistry

Theoretical and Computational Chemistry are scientific disciplines, which deal with the development and implementation of theoretical approaches in chemistry related problems.Over the past decade, both theoretical and computational chemistry have undergone a paradigm shift triggered by the advent of newer theories/algorithms and high-end supercomputers, making the study of large and complex systems easily within reach. Computational simulations help overcome the inherent limitations of experimental research, and therefore constitute the "third pillar" of science. As a result, there is an explosion in the demand for experts in this field.

Work in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry has also been recognized by the Nobel Committee for Chemistry which awarded the Nobel Prizes to diverse contributions in this field. Theoretical and Computational Chemistry has become essential for the propagation molecular science, and by the end of the 20th century, it would undoubtedly mark the beginning of a new era.

Owing to the practical importance of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry in not just Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Der Pharma Chemica journal has decided to host a special issue highlighting the recent developments and future trends in the fields of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry. The journal would be addressing the following broad topics:

  • Drug discovery
  • Chemical reaction dynamics
  • Protein-protein interaction networks
  • Polymer structure and dynamics
  • Non-equilibrium statistical mechanics
  • Computational and theoretical approaches for biomolecular simulations
  • Quantum-mechanical methodologies for energy and electron transport
  • Carbon capture and hydrogen storage in porous materials
  • Theoretical geochemistry
  • Computational modeling of heterogeneous chemistry
  • Electronic structure calculations of complexes
  • Magnetic and transport properties of metal-organic frameworks

This special issue will hopefully become a stepping stone in Chemistry as well as Biochemistry, and will ultimately result in a better understanding of the world and the laws governing it; not to mention impacts at a much granular level, dedicated to answering questions regarding basic chemical reactions in our day-to-day lives.

Manuscripts highlighting one or more of the above-mentionedfields of study may be submitted to submit@derpharmachemica.com in the form of research article, review articles, case studies, short communications and/or opinion articles.

Applications of Green Chemistry

Green chemistry deals with the development of products and processes, which minimize the generation and use of hazardous substances. Green chemistry aims to prevent pollution by means of synthesis ofnon-toxic chemicals, thereby eliminating exposure to toxic substances. Rather than focusing solely on the toxic or undesirable by-products, green chemistry also encompasses all agents that are part of the process. Furthermore, green chemistry also encourages the use of renewable feedstock, reduction of energy utilization, and optimization of factors beneficial for the environment and human health. Often referred to as pollution prevention at the molecular- level, Green Chemistry is based on twelve cardinal principles that can be harnessed to design or re-design molecules and materials in amuch safer manner.

Over the past decade, green chemistry has evolved and has been adopted across laboratories in both industry and academia. Additionally, novel amendments in chemicals policy have resulted in increased opportunities for legislative action to be taken for protecting human health and the environment. Due to the practical importance of Green chemistry in the development of a more eco-friendly society, the Der Pharma Chemica journal has decided to host a special issue highlighting the applications of Green chemistry. This special issue will be addressing the following topics:

  • Green Solvents

Invention and Development of Novel Drugs

Drug discovery and development is usually conducted in a sequential manner, starting with the Discovery and succeeded by the Preclinical, Clinical, and Non-Clinical phases of drug development. The discovery phase is an extremely lengthy and cost-intensive process and is sub-divided into (1) Hit Finding, (2) Lead generation, (3) Lead Optimization, and (4) Candidate Identification Phases. The availability of new drugs amounts to newer and better treatment options for patients. However, innovation in drug development is stalling; the number of drugs approved for every $1 billion invested, has been slashed by 50% every nine years since the 1950s.

A 2013 FDA report suggests that only 40% of the new drug approvals spread over the past 25 years represent genuinely innovative drugs. This “first-in-class” therapeutics has the greatest potential of transforming patient outcomes as they take novel approaches to fight disease. The balance 60%, employ pre-existing approaches, and therefore yields only incremental improvements. Therefore, it is essential to restart the engine of innovation in the field of drug development, the Der Pharma Chemica journal has decided to host a special issue highlighting the latest developments in drug development. The broad subject areas this special issue will be addressing the following topics:

  • Precision Medicine

Der Pharma Chemica Journal deals with the diverse scope of the medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology and so on. The Journal office has been planning to release the special issue entitled “Formulation and synthesis of Novel anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-infective drugs” tentatively by the 1st week of March, 2021. The journal aims to provide the scientific community with the novel and required information regarding the technologies used, parameters considered, specimens analysed, etc. for the future drug discoveries by publishing this special issue.

It is a high time for the pharmaceutical industries to concentrate on the formulation and synthesis of new drugs for combating the emerging chronic Infectious, microbial and viral diseases, as the pandemic is resulting to be the major concern worldwide. In spite of the great advances in drug therapy for treating various infectious, viral, diseases, there is still an urgent need for new and improved drugs due to increasing drug resistance among pathogens, emergence of new pathogens, ease of transmission of infections, ineffective available treatments, toxicity associated with current standard of care, aging populations and the lack of better alternative treatment options. The pharmaceutical industry of today evolved largely from the chemical industry. As these roots would suggest, chemistry was a key component of early drug discoveries that were focused on pain management and the treatment of inflammation and infectious diseases.

The scope of the special issue also targets the below mentioned topics.

  • Biofilm
  • Bacterial virulence
  • Peptide-based drugs
  • Anti-parasitic
  • Drug screening and  repurposing
