12-Tungstophosphoric acid (H 3 PW 12 O 40 ) was found to be highly efficient, eco-friendly an d recyclable catalyst for the three-component cyclocondensation of 1,3-dimeth ylbarbituric acid, aryl aldehydes, and malononitril e, giving rise to pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidines. The reactions occ ur in ethanol as solvent and furnish the correspond ing products in high yields. The catalyst is inexpensive and rea dily available and can be recovered conveniently an d reused efficiently such that a considerable catalytic acti vity still could be achieved after fourth run. Othe r advantages of this protocol are short reaction times and a simple procedure with an easy work-up.
