The chemical investigation of the hydro-methanolic extract of leaves from Celtis australis led to the isolation of 3 known compounds: 2 sterols (b-sitosterol and b-sitosterol-3-O-b-glucoside) and 1 phenolic acid (vanillic acid) which are reported for the first time in this plant species. Antioxidant activity of the isolated compounds was assessed by in vitro measurement of DPPH (1, 1’-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) radical scavenging activity and conjugated dienes (CD) and TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) inhibition during linoleic acid peroxidation. Antimicrobial activity of isolated compounds was also carried out by the quantification of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) using disc diffusion technique against seven bacterial and three fungal strains. The results of the present study showed the significant (P<0.01) antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the tested compounds.
