In this study, ultratrace level of cyanide was dete cted based on the catalytic reaction of ninhydrin i n the presence of cyanide ion under the optimum conditions. The absor bance of the blue solution of 2-cyano-1,2,3-trihydr oxy-2H indene was measured at both maximum wavelengths of 352 and 598 nm. The developed method gave linear ra nge of 0.02-0.1 μ g/mL for cyanide ion. Effect of various kinds of al cohols on the absorbance was investigated. Generall y, cyanide is a toxic substance with LC 50 at μ g/mL, which is rather difficult to determine. Thus, this method was adopted for higher accuracy and precision. At prese nt, alcohols produced from cyanide-rich cassava are commercially available which could be contaminated with the cyanide residue. In this case, an antisept ic alcohol, isopropanol 70% (v/v), was subject as a model solut ion for cyanide testing with satisfied recovery and without any interference from the diluted isopropanol solution
